An article in the NY Times revealed that the most powerful AI systems are producing more incorrect information.

”Today’s A.I. bots are based on complex mathematical systems that learn their skills by analyzing enormous amounts of digital data. They do not — and cannot — decide what is true and what is false,” the authors explained.

In one benchmark test, newer AI systems had hallucination rates as high as 79%.

“Those hallucinations may not be a big problem for many people,” the authors wrote, “but it is a serious issue for anyone using the technology with court documents, medical information or sensitive business data.”

So ask yourself: Is your support team ready for the backlash? Can your marketing team defend that failure? If your brand’s secret sauce is trust, are you prepared to risk it?

Five Ways to Course Correct

1. Make AI Literacy Mandatory

AI isn’t just for engineers. Everyone from leadership to product teams should understand how it works, where it helps, and where it doesn’t. Basic AI fluency reduces hype and improves decision-making.

2. Treat AI Like Any Other Critical System

AI shouldn’t be a black box. Ask questions: What data powers this? Who is testing and responsible for the output? What happens when it fails? If no one can answer, the issue isn’t AI.

If a feature in your product failed 79% of the time, you’d scrap it, so why hold AI to a lower standard?

3. Demand AI Competence, Not Curiosity

Curiosity isn’t enough. Teams need to understand the differences between model versions—when to use Claude, Gemini, or GPT—and how to fine-tune or customize them. Choosing the wrong model wastes time, money, and compute.

4. Don’t Overdesign the Interface

AI UX doesn’t need to be flashy. Users are already accustomed to clean, simple AI interfaces (think input box, button, response); there’s no need to overcomplicate.

5. Treat AI as an Evolving Capability, Not a One-Time Fix

AI isn’t static. Models need tuning, retraining, and updates. Treat AI as a living system, just like security or performance, and build ongoing support into your roadmap. If you can only pick one model, make it an informed choice and ensure all stakeholders understand the risks.
